Make a backup before editing
Keep an untouched copy of the downloaded files. Work on a duplicate so you can return to the original layout when necessary.
Use the advertised software
Open the template in the software named on its product page. Converting it through unrelated applications can change spacing, fonts and alignment.
Replace every sample detail
Change names, contact details, job titles, dates, links and sample achievements. Remove sections that do not apply and never submit placeholder content.
Prioritise evidence
Use concise statements that explain what you did and the outcome. Where accurate and appropriate, include numbers that show scale, time, revenue, efficiency, growth or quality.
Keep formatting consistent
Use consistent date styles, heading sizes, punctuation and spacing. Avoid shrinking text until the document becomes difficult to read.
Review ATS suitability
For ATS-dependent applications, prefer the products specifically marked ATS-Friendly and keep important information in normal text. Employer systems vary, so always follow the application instructions.
Export and proofread
Check the final document at 100% zoom, export it to the format requested by the employer and proofread names, dates, spelling and contact information before submitting.
